The purpose of the project is to raise awareness on both the Czech and Austrian sides of the manuscript of Gregor Johann Mendel, in which he established the basic laws of inheritance. The manuscript is property of Augustinian Abbey in Brno. We are taking preparatory steps to write Mendel’s manuscript in the UNESCO World Memory so that it will be written by 2022, when we commemorate 200 years since Mendel’s birth. Mendel’s work is closely connected with the city of Brno, but also with Austria, his studies in Vienna became the basis for his discoveries and scientific work. The project will focus on promoting the worldwide significance of Mendel’s manuscript, so that the inhabitants of the cross-border region can learn about this gem stored in the heart of the city of Brno.
We are implementing this project together with the Austrian partner Verein Family Business.
As part of the project, we will have 10 facsimiles of Mendel’s manuscript made, we will organize an excursion of an expert commission composed of representatives of the city of Brno, the abbey and Masaryk University to one of the Austrian institutions, which has already succeeded in writing historical documents in the UNESCO World Memory. We will organize a press conference in Brno for the excursion, in cooperation with an Austrian partner we will ensure the media coverage of the excursion and press conference in Austria. We will also draw up a bilingual strategic plan for the inscription of Mendel’s manuscript in the UNESCO World Heritage by 2022, in order to properly celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of this genius. We will also make a bilingual promotional video – it will be used to promote the manuscript.
All project activities would not be possible without the financial support of the European Union, the INTERREG V-A Austria-Czech Republic program.
